Ce recueil de nouvelles est très agréable à lire, mais m’a laissé une impression douce-amère. En effet, ces nouvelles dégagent un humour certain, souvent assez acide d’ailleurs, mais font aussi et surtout ressentir la dureté de la condition féminine en Inde, où les femmes n’ont quasi aucun droit, si ce n’est celui d’être mariées très rapidement. Dans ces historiettes, menées avec beaucoup de légèreté, des femmes vont voir leur vie changer, souvent de façon positive, qu’elles découvrent une certaine paix ou une certaine liberté. Liberté, qui, soyons clair, est encore très loin de celle à laquelle nous avons droit en Europe.
